ANN ARBOR, MI — Ryan Douma said it was a summer trip to visit family out of state that introduced him to what he calls “hostile suburbanism” in Ann Arbor.

When he and his wife, a University of Michigan law school student, returned home to their duplex on Ann Arbor’s west side after a week in New Jersey in July 2023, a friend’s Honda Accord they borrowed for the summer was missing, no longer parked along the curb where they left it.
